Making Facebook work for you is not as easy as it used to be. With social media platforms becoming more aware of the ways they can glean money from users, the harder it is to get a following. However, it’s not impossible and simply takes a bit more work and focus than it used to.

Know Your Following

Each group or page on Facebook is going to have a different type of following. Posting the same type of content to a dog lover’s page as you would a cooking page isn’t going to turn out well. Know your followers and what they like. If you’re newer to the Facebook game, no worries, do some basic posts that fit the niche and sit back to see which type of post did the best. Use this knowledge and expound upon it by posting more of this style.

Don’t go crazy posting too much of the same style. Broaden your scope because you want your followers to be engaged, not eventually bored by the same thing over and over again. Keep trying various types of posts until you’ve found a handful of styles that you can choose from to keep things fresh.

Stay Consistent

The worst thing you can do with any social media platform is be inconsistent. All social media platforms run on algorithms and if your posting is inconsistent, the algorithm will basically ignore you until you are. Stay on top of posting at the same times with the same daily frequency. Utilizing the Facebook scheduling option is well worth your time as it will save you from having to remember to post multiple times a day.

Be aware of how many times you post a day and at what time you post. For example, if you only have around 1,000 followers, posting 12 times a day will become spammy and you may very well lose many followers because of this. Posting around three times a day is more fitting for this level of followers. Now, if you have over 100,000 followers, then posting 12 times a day is appropriate. Why? Odds are you are covering many, if not all, the times zones across the world which means you need broader posting times to reach and connect with all of your followers.

The time you post is just as important as how many times you’re posting in a day. Posting three times a day can feel like you’re leaving large blocks of time unused. However, if you have a smaller group of followers, odds are, they’re more family friends or people more within your time zone. If you think about an average person’s day (work, school, kids, etc.) then it’s easy to know when everyone will be looking at their Facebooks. Lunchtime, in the morning when they’re waking up, at night before they go to bed, etc.

Don’t Forget to Engage

Not only should you be posting content that’s drawing people in to engage (memes, open-ended questions, conversation starters, etc.) but you should be engaging right back. Responding to as many comments as possible, even if it only involves a reaction, is vital when it comes to the current Facebook algorithm. They like to see page and group owners engaging with their followers instead of leaving them out there to dry. Outside of that, people currently love that personalized experience and are more willing to stick around if they feel invested in it.

Utilize the Insights

Facebook has this nifty tool called “insights” that all page and group owners can see when on or in their page or group. This is extremely useful as it will tell you stats for each post as well as stats for the page as a whole. These insights are what will guide you in knowing what to post, when to post, and where the majority of your followers are coming from. In other words, it can tell you what to keep doing and what to avoid in the future.

Another feature in your insights allows you to save similar pages that might have larger followings. This is so you can see which of their posts have been performing the best so you can easily share it. This often helps ensure you’re posting relevant and fresh content that your followers will most likely rave over. This saves you from having to search all over Facebook when needing new content.

Making Facebook work for you can be easy once you’re all setup. However, when first starting out, it takes a bit of research, patience, and diligence. In the end, it’s all worth it because Facebook is one of the largest platforms for traffic and you don’t want to miss being a part of it.
